THE BLACK & WHITE SESSIONS

MIKATA

EXPOSITION

A name that translates to “ally,” a sound that means more. Mikata is an expression of partnership and creative competition, visually defined by a custom typeface that echoes its bold, evocative sound.

I created a custom typeface to shape the logotype for my musical endeavor. Mikata—the Japanese word for “ally”—draws inspiration from Japanese culture and design. The name and logotype were refined using the same strategies my project partner and I apply in our songwriting, embracing friendly rivalry to push ideas further by stimulating inspiration. The result is a visual identity that aligns our vision, complemented by music that evokes the same depth of emotion. Below, you’ll find an early listen to a handful of tracks from our first LP release, The Black & White Sessions.

Through film, I led a concept in collaboration with my wife of sharing heartfelt moments and experiences with friends—a theme that has always been a driver of our desire to make music. From the start, our goal has been to create soundtracks for the memories we make with loved ones—ones that feels as epic as the moments themselves.

Mikata’s identity is a true collaboration, embraced by the belief that friendly competition stokes creativity. The dynamic push and pull between collaborators is what brought it to life—typeface design and single release art by Zach Bates, songwriting by Mark Erece and Zach Bates, and audio engineering by Mark Erece.

With a foundation built on collaboration, Mikata is more than just a musical endeavor—it’s an exploration of sound and identity. By merging design principles with sonic expression, we create an experience where visuals and sound work in harmony to inspire and challenge both creators and listeners.

Driven by a spirit of friendly rivalry and artistic innovation, Mikata continues to push boundaries across genres, creating immersive soundscapes that evoke deep emotional connection. With each track, we refine our craft, blending technical precision with raw passion to produce a sound that is both intentional and instinctive.

Mark—the other ½ of the Mikata post-rock outfit—wigglin’ some strings.
